The Honorable Mark A. Davis was sworn in as a Special Superior Court Judge for Complex Business Cases on July 1, 2021 with chambers located in Raleigh. A lifelong resident of North Carolina Judge Davis was born in Jacksonville and grew up in Fayetteville. He received his undergraduate degree in 1988 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during which time he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. In 1991, he received his law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law, where he served on The North Carolina Law Review.

Following a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Franklin T. Dupree, Jr. of the Eastern District of North Carolina, Judge Davis spent thirteen years as an attorney with the Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice law firm, where he became a member of the firm in its Litigation Section. From 2006 to 2011, he served as a Special Deputy Attorney General in the Special Litigation Section of the North Carolina Department of Justice. After spending approximately two years as General Counsel in the Office of the Governor, he was appointed to the North Carolina Court of Appeals as an Associate Judge in 2012 and was elected to a full term in 2014. During his service on the Court of Appeals, Judge Davis received a Masters of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Judicial Studies from the Duke University School of Law.

In March of 2019, Judge Davis was appointed as an Associate Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court. He served in that role through December 2020. In January of 2021, he was appointed to a six-month term as a Visiting Distinguished Jurist in Residence at the Elon University School of Law.

In 2019, Judge Davis authored a book titled A Warren Court of Our Own: The Exum Court and the Expansion of Individual Rights in North Carolina. He has served on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Bar Association and as a member of the Appellate Rules Committee, the Bench-Bar Liaison Committee, and the Constitutional and Civil Rights Section of the Bar Association. Judge Davis has lectured extensively throughout the state at Continuing Legal Education seminars on the subject of appellate advocacy and has taught classes on The Nature of the Judicial Process at several law schools in North Carolina. He is a member of the Raleigh Rotary Club and is a recipient of The Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He and his wife Marcia Davis live in Raleigh and have three children.
