Personal Background

Judge Valerie J. Zachary was born in 1962 to James Johnson (deceased) and Vienna Rains Johnson. She hails from Yadkin County and is married to Representative Lee Zachary. Judge Zachary has one adult daughter, Rachel Zachary, two adult stepdaughters, Alice Zachary and Mary Zachary May, and two beautiful grandchildren, Jack and Sarah Grace. Judge Zachary is a member of Yadkinville United Methodist Church.

Educational Background

Judge Zachary received her Juris Doctor cum laude from the Harvard Law School in 1987. In 1984, Judge Zachary obtained her Bachelor of Arts with honors in Multidisciplinary Studies (with concentrations in French, Economics and Political Science) from Michigan State University.

Experience

While at Harvard Law School, Judge Zachary was employed as a research assistant by Professor Laurence H. Tribe, assisting in the review and revision of the second edition of Professor Tribe's treatise American Constitutional Law. She was also a member of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau and the Women's Law Association, as well as a moot court judge critiquing briefs for the Ames Moot Court Competition. Upon graduating from law school in 1987, Judge Zachary joined the litigation team of the Charlotte firm Kennedy Covington Lobdell & Hickman (now K & L Gates). In 1989, Judge Zachary returned to Yadkin County to marry her husband, Lee Zachary, and practiced law for 26 years at Zachary Law Offices in Yadkinville, where she was a partner.

Judge Zachary has been admitted to practice before all North Carolina courts, the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, United States Tax Court, and the Western and Middle District federal courts. In 2015, Governor Pat McCrory appointed Judge Zachary to the bench. Judge Zachary was elected to an eight-year term in 2016.


Community Involvement

Over the years Judge Zachary has been active in many varied civic, charitable and community activities, including among other pursuits: Board Member, E. H. Barnard Trust; Board Member, Yadkin SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now); Board Member, Friends For Youth; Past President, Yadkin County Bar Association; NC Bar Association, Young Lawyers Division, Coordinator of Third Grader "Big Bad Wolf" trial; Chair, Advisory Board of Yadkinville Elementary School; Chair, Town of Yadkinville Appearance Committee; Volunteer, Downtown Business Association; Volunteer, Yadkinville Elementary School (Spanish teacher, reading tutor, cheerleader fundraiser).

Judge Zachary has also been an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities, including: Contributor, Clergy/Spouse Divorce Pamphlet; Member, Nominations Committee; Director, College Care Packages Outreach Ministry; English Tutor, Catholic Hispanic Center; Chair, Children's Ministries; Sunday School teacher; Director, Vacation Bible School; and Communion Coordinator, in addition to many other responsibilities.

She is currently a member of the Sir Walter Cabinet, the Susie M. Sharp Inn of Court, the American Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association, the North Carolina State Bar, the Twenty-Third Judicial District Bar Association, the Wake County Bar Association, and the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys.
